Varanasi Wildlife Sanctuaries

Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary :

Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary is is situated about 65 kilometres from the historic and most famous religious city of India : Varanasi. This sanctuary has a number of picnic spots and waterfalls that make it popular among tourists.
This sanctuary is spread over an area of 78 sq km and lies on Naugarh and Vijaigarh hillocks in the Vindhya forest range in
Chandauli.

This north Indian Sanctuary is a house of Chinkara and Panther, also a home to a number of animals : sambhar, nilgai, blackbucks, porcupine and wild boar, python and gharial. This sanctuary is also home to a number of birds around (150 species of birds).
Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary was home to Asiatic Lions, but their numbers gradually decreased and today it is difficult to find a trace of theose lions.

How to get there :

Air : The nearest airport is at Varanasi, 65 kms.
Rail : The nearest railway is at Mughal Sarai(55kms) and Varanasi.
Road : Easily accessible by road from Varanasi.

Kaimoor Wildlife Sanctuary :

The Kaimoor wildlife Sanctuary is situated about 100 kilometres far from the historic and most famous pilgrimage destination of India : Varanasi, and was established in 1982 and spread  over an area of 500 sq. kms. Located near the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border.


This santuary comperises a number of species e.g. leopard, blackbuck, chital, chinkara, ratel and peafowl, antelope, blue bull, wild cat, karakal, and bijju. There are quite a few varieties of local & migratory birds forming a large part of the wild population. and as veegetation there are saal, sheesham teek, mahua, jamun, siddha, salai, koraiya and jheeng, etc.

Road : Kaimoor is easily accessible by road from Varanasi and Mirzapur (100 kms).
