| Varanasi
: generally called as "Benaras" in Indian mothertoungue
and also known as "Kashi" in the view of pilgrimage,
is one of the oldest living cities in the world and the
most important pilgrimage destination in India. Varanasi
or Benares city has as large amount of shrines, temples
the riverfronts i.e. Ghats as it is old. The main attraction
here are the Riverfront : "Ghats", each with
its own significance. For the western tourist, Varanasi
is an ideal window to view thousands of years old Indian
cultural traditions. No other place in the world has this
timeless quality or such a holy and soulful atmosphere.
According to legend Kashi is the 'original ground' created
by Lord Shiva and Parvati, the cosmic lord and his wife,
its original name is "Kashi" drived from the
word "Kash" means "to shine" meaning
bright which define it's significance as the 'city of
light' as it's spiritual luminance.
Every pious Hindu believes that to die in Kashi and to
be cremated on banks of the Ganges is to attain release
from the cycle of birth and death.
Varanasi has been a centre of handicrafts, specially silk
weaving. Other attractions include brassware, ivory ware,
gold jewelry, wood crafts, wall hangings and lampshades,
Carpets and masks of various Hindu/ Buddhist gods , goddesses
and saints. |
