Fair and Festivals in Varanasi

Buddha Purnima - Sarnath

This festival is celebrated in the memory of the Lord Buddha. It is celebration the birth of Lord Budha. On this day a large fair is held at Sarnath and relics of the Buddha are taken out in a procession.

Dhrupad Mela

Dhrupad Mela is one of the most famous festival-cum-fair of the city as well as this  state. This fair is held in March, at at Tulsi Ghat of holy river Ganga and celebrated for five days. These days are very musical, and different type of musical programs are performed.

Nakkatyya

This is an another episode from the Ramayana, which is performed annually, at Chetganj (varanasi). This festival is celebrated with stage play on the Ramayana.

Hanuman Jayanti

The hanuman Jayanti celebrition is based the Janmotsav(Birth celebrations) of Lord Hanuman also known as Sankat Mochan. This is held at festivities at the Sankat Mochan temple(Varanasi) ans  continue for 5 days.

Panch Koshi Parikrama

Panch Koshi Parikrama means passes of five holy places according to celebration of this festival, because the parikrama passes through five places : Kardmeshwar, Bhimchandi, Rameshwar, Shivpur and Kapildhara.

Mahashivratri

Although Mahashivratri is  celebrated all over India as a major Hindu festival, Mahashivratri in Varanasi has a special attraction of its own. Specially celebration of the marriage procession of Lord Shiva which has a "Barat Party" start to walk from Maha-mritunjaya temple to Kashi Vishwanath temple.

The Ramlila

The Ramlila festival is totally based on Ramcharitmanas (written by Tulsidas) and celebrated for a month long between days October and November at Ramnagar (Varanasi). One can see ancient rituals being performed during this time.

Bharat Milap

Bharat Milap : Ram’s reunion with his younger brother Bharat, is celebrated on the days after Dussehra (Durga Puja). This is also a major event celebrated at Nati Imli, Varanasi.
